Woodworking jigs are extremely useful pieces of equipment, it only takes one time with a jig to discover that you could never do the job without one in future! It's always annoying if you drill holes too deep, or you can't hang pictures straight. There are so many tasks which can be made so much easier by using the right woodworking jig.

A jig doesn't have to be anything expensive or too fancy. In fact it's often possible to create your own jig for smaller tasks. If you are a professional woodworker then you should already have quite an extensive collection of jigs! These will save your time and so allow you to be more profitable, not to mention the amount of wasted materials you can actually use.

The Short List of Jigs Long on Performance

If you don't have much money to spend on woodworking tools then there are some important jigs which you should bear in mind.

A dowel jig is used to make precision holes for your dowel. This is a very useful jig if you are making furniture as dowels can be used in a number of locations, including holding the draw fronts onto the frame.

Another jig which is very important is the dovetail jig. By being able to do a dovetail joint you are making your work look much more professional. Old things used to have dovetail draws, a piece of furniture 50 years old is still around today because it was made very well. Dovetailed joints make it very strong and durable. Purchase a dovetail job with your jig and then you're able to create fine pieces of professional furniture.

More important jigs include router jigs, these are used to support the wood as it passes along the saw to be cut. These can be used to help the craftsman create very fine detail.

Kreg woodworking jigs are very popular, these normally come with face clamps so that the drill jigs can be secured firmly in place. You can use these jigs to drill to very specific and accurate depths.

If you don't have a jig available but need to drill to a certain depth then one solution is to put a thick ring of masking tape around the drill at the depth that you want to drill to. When you drill you will see the marker so you will know when to stop drilling. This isn't as accurate as a professional kreg woodworking jig however it really does work. It's also extremely quick to do and you don't need any additional equipment. These things are fine for the occasional job, however if you're a professional then you really need the right tools for the job!

Great Deal Bare-Tool Hitachi DV18DLP4 18-Volt Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammer Drill (Tool Only, No Battery)

I am an avid DIY'er and I now own three of these DV18DL Lithium-Ion drills. They have more than enough torque to handle most any job I throw at them. Just make sure you have a firm grip on the drill or it will torque around in a heartbeat.

The only problems I have encountered with this drill are with the chuck screw that holds the chuck in place is inadequate and I broken three of them while using a 1" Ship Auger bit to drill through a 8" log I ran into while digging post holes for a split rail fence. Fortunately I had bought the drill from L_o_w_e_s and they exchanged them without issue. The manager I talked to said that he had notified Hitachi of the problem but that they were not going to beef up the screw.

I ordered a number of chuck screws for various makes & models of 1/2" drills (including corded drills) and discovered that the Dewalt reverse thread screw #605256-01. It is just a bit longer that the Hitachi OEM screw and I haven't broken one since replacing it ^_^.

The second issue is with the tabs on the case that hold the battery in place. I accidentally dropped it 4' onto a concrete floor. It landed flat on the bottom of the battery. The battery was fine, but both of the tabs that hold the battery in place busted off. Luckily I have a Hitachi repair shop a mile from my home here in Belmont, MI and they replaced the case free of charge within a week. But as I said I now have three of these and four of the 3.0ah batteries.

The last Drill I purchased was the bare (DV18DLP4) drill from Timberline Tools in July 2009 and they timely shipped one to me ^_^.

I bought mine as part of a 9pc kit and I have a review under the 9pc as well. (check that review as it has other good info)

Was impressed with the unit at first as it works well for projects around the house and easily drives screws, drills holes etc..

BUT I recently tried using it to drill 2 2" holes using a Starret hole saw. I was trying to go up into a wall from the basement through 2 2x4's and a sheet of 3/4" plywood. I was able to drill through the sheet of ply with no problem stopped to remove the piece of wood from the hole saw and then started into the 2x4 part drill struggled for about 2-3 minutes before overheating and stopping. At first I thought it was the battery so I swapped the battery for the second one and that worked for another minute or so. After a few minutes of stop and go I made it through the first hole and started on the second. Well never made it even through the plywood before it was just too hot to use so I took a break, ate a quick lunch and tried again. I expected to be able to get back to it and finish I figured 15 minutes had passed and the drill should have cooled down well that wasn't the case it worked for 15 seconds before once again going into protect.

Finally I just said screw it went to the garage, got my Milwaukee 1/2" corded hammer drill and I swear 15 seconds later I was done.

Like I said this is a great drill if you are a homeowner but if you are going to use this as a professional MOVE ON! I replaced my Dewalt 18v 4 pc kit that needed new batts (4 batts would have cost me 0 plus my drill was damaged)

I got a good deal through Tyler tool 0 for the 9pc set (shipped). Should have spent the extra 0 and gotten the Dewalt 9pc and I would have had the right angle drill and a flashlight that works.

It's amazing how far chainsaw sharpeners have come in the past few years. It's still wise to have a trusty round file with you in the woods for touch ups, but one hundred dollars will buy you an excellent electric chainsaw sharpener to mount in your workshop for perfect chain sharpening.

A number of manufacturers now sell electric bench mounted chainsaw sharpeners which allow very accurate settings for the angle of the grinder and the depth of cut. Automatic chain feeds quickly move the chain to the next tooth so all you have to do is lower the grinding head for a second on each cutter. Some people will argue that the sharpening achieved from a chain grinder is never the same as when using a hand-held round file due to the shape of the grinder and the method in which it moves into the tooth. This may be true if you are a professional logger and use a round file every day to perform your job. But for 99% of the population there is no way that they can achieve the same consistency that you get with an automated electric chainsaw sharpener.

I was a little surprised to see only one review on this drill and a poor score. Breakdowns happen with tools, which is acceptable if the problem is not a pervasive one. I have owned many Dewalt tools and have only had one trigger go bad. With Dewalt's warranty it was quickly repaired.

As for tool performance, I love this drill as it combines driver, drill and hammerdrill functions in one tool. I build decks and use this drill for pilot holes, boring larger holes for carriage bolts, and drilling anchor bolt holes in concrete. While it isn't a perfect tool for these jobs, the versatility makes up for it. The only alternative is buying a dedicated tool for each use such as a dedicated hammerdrill. Because the drill is necessarily heavy to accomodate the hammerdrill function, I use a Dewalt Impact Driver for driving screws, as it is lighter and the impact function makes it so easy.

I have read negative reviews about the new Nano battery's shutdown feature when it reaches a certain discharge level. I happen to like this feature. The battery delivers almost full power right up to the point of shutdown, helping me avoid the temptation to keep driving with a weak battery and using the drill like a screwdriver on those last couple screws, which is hard on the drill. Second, I believe this feature will result in a longer cycle life for the battery, since the number one reason for premature battery failure is inconsistent charging cycles, i.e. charging the battery when it's half drained one time and totally dead the next time. With the Nano, I just run it till it stops, then charge. I know I am cycling it consistently.
